A recent study has discovered that a diet rich in flavanols, a type of flavonoid known for reducing inflammation, can help in mitigating age-related memory loss. In a three-year experiment involving over 3,500 healthy seniors, the subjects were given either a daily flavanol supplement or a placebo. The flavanol supplement group, particularly those who had a poor diet at the start, experienced an increase in memory scores by an average of 10.5% compared to the placebo group. This improvement suggests that flavanol-rich diets or supplements could be a potential strategy to enhance cognitive function in older adults. Foods high in flavanols include onions, lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, kale, spinach, tea, and wine. Besides incorporating these foods into the diet, other strategies to prevent memory loss include brain exercises, maintaining adequate sleep, managing chronic health conditions, daily physical activity, limiting alcohol intake, and maintaining social connections.
… participants who ate a poorer diet and had lower levels of flavanols to begin with saw memory scores increase after taking flavanol supplements by an average of 10.5% compared to the placebo group and 16% compared to their memory at the beginning of the study.
