Bed Mobility Definition

For caregivers and care recipients, bed mobility is a very important concept to understand. It basically means the ability to move from one bed position to another. Movements such as rolling and scooting while in the supine (lying on your back) position, reaching from side to side, bridging (lifting your hips off the bed), as well as, moving between supine and sitting, and also sitting and scooting on the edge of the bed are all included when talking about bed mobility.

Its important that caregivers understand which aspects of bed mobility their care recipient are able and unable to perform and how best to assist them.

Maintaining independent bed mobility is valuable in and of itself because its essential for relative functional independence and limiting the work caregivers have to do when assisting their care recipient.
